First aid and primary treatment for minor injuries on dogs’ paws or skin.
Minor injuries to our pets are a possible scenario; in most cases, they need basic to minimal care. Especially in summer, dry branches and grass, thorns, hot sand and roads, and playing in gardens and parks may entail dangers for our dogs, such as minor burns and scratches on our dog’s paws or bodies. The good news is that they can be easily treated at home and relieve our dog while simultaneously preventing the risk of infection.
Just as we take care of our family members and ourselves, we should also have a basic first aid kit at home for our pets.
List of first aid equipment for pets
- Gauze, cotton in lint-free trays or cotton cloth for the cleaning of wounds
- Wound antiseptic for animals
- Tweezers for removing foreign bodies (thorns, spikes from branches, dirt, etc.)
- Healing ointment for pets
- Bandages in case we need to bandage the wound
So, if our pet has been scratched or slightly burned its paws from contact with hot asphalt or sand, we can take care of these minor injuries with simple steps at home.
1) First, if there is a foreign body or thorn left in the area, we carefully remove the foreign body without leaving any part of it on the skin using a pair of tweezers.
2) We then clean and disinfect the injured area or paw using a sanitary cotton pad or gauze and an antiseptic suitable for pets, such as Ear & Skin Care 3in1. Ear & skin contains fast-acting active silver micro-particles that strengthen the defense against bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. You can spray directly on the wound and clean the wound with a clean cloth.
3) Allow the scratch to air and dry for a while, and then apply an animal-friendly healing cream such as Wound Relief Ointment.
Wound Relief Ointment is an intensive moisturizing ointment containing Colloidal Silver with antibacterial and healing properties, strengthening the defense of the pet’s skin against microorganisms. It is ideal for use on skin and paws and helps the effective and faster healing of abrasions and skin lesions. With its innovative rich composition, it contains organic Aloe, known for its healing, sun- protective, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, anti-aging, and antiseptic properties; Zinc Oxide with proven effectiveness in regenerating new skin tissue and a mild antiseptic effect. Its action is enhanced by the Terpene-rich Tea Tree Essential oils, Rosemary, and Lavender that strengthens the action of silver, and Calendula, which helps restore the skin and helps to heal skin lesions faster. Would Relief Ointment, awarded for using Olive oil in its composition, as it is rich in natural squalene, vitamin E, Ω3, Ω6, and Ω9 fatty acids, thus offer the necessary nutrients at the point of application. Organic Beeswax, combined with Honey and Olive Oil, significantly accelerates the healing of 2nd-degree burns in dogs. At the same time, the Mixture of Pseudoceramides which act similarly to the ceramides of the skin - the connective “glue” between cells that maintains the epidermal barrier - offers immediate relief to the area where it is applied immediately after use.
4) Keep the area clean during healing and continue applying the ointment until the injured area heals.
IMPORTANT: If it is a serious injury with active bleeding or a severe burn, we immediately consult and visit our vet as professional treatment and protocol are required.
So, do enjoy walking and playing with them as even for the most careless or slightly more adventurous pets that may cause mild scratches to themselves, first aid care from dedicated guardians and the right products makes sure they can continue to be the playful and maybe slightly goofy pets we love so much!
