CURLY DOG GROOMING

A Dog with Curls? Awesome! Let’s make them perfect!
How to groom a curly hair dog: Tips from Top Dog!

General characteristics

We find curly or wavy coats in dog breeds like Poodles, Labradoodles, Terriers (Kerry Blue, Airedale, Bedlington a.o), Bichon Frises, Barbets as well as mixed breeds. The length and density differ depending on the breed and each dog individually, but the common characteristic of curly coat dogs is their grooming needs such as frequent brushing (with some exceptions like the Komodors in which case their dense, corded coat does not allow brushing) and their bathing routine with suitable for curly coats dog shampoos. Depending on the type and length of their coat, as well as the daily life of your curly four-legged friend they might also need a haircut - to avoid intense tangling and mating - that should only be done by a professional groomer.

Brushing of dog's curly coats

  • The curly coat usually needs frequent – even daily – brushing to maintain its health and to avoid tangling and mating. Brushing is also essential before bathing a dog. ATTENTION: We never brush a very dirty, matted coat as we run the risk of transferring bacteria and germs from the hair to the skin.
  • Before you start, “brush” the entire coat using your fingers in a gentle massage manner to locate possible abrasions or injuries of the skin, or any foreign objects tangled in the coat to avoid further hurting your four-legged friend or make brushing more painful for them.
If you find a serious injury consult your vet and make sure the wound is healed before you proceed with the grooming.
  • Then, having first gotten the suitable for curly coat comp or brush, which is usually a slicker or a pinned brush – ideal for detangling – carefully brush your dog with soft, slow movements. Start by first untangling the knots. To make the process faster and more importantly less painful and irritating for your pet you can use specialized untangling styling products like Easy Comp or Miracle Detangler by Top Dog.
  • Once you untangle the knots gently brush the entire coat to also remove the dead hair. For a complete result and a shiny coat, you can complement the grooming with one of our coat enhancing and styling products like Bright Shine to give shine or any of our hydrating hypoallergenic Top Dog fragrances.
