MY DOG HAS DANDRUFF. HOW CAN I TREAT IT?
It is common to see our dog developing dandruff as various reasons can cause it either occasionally or repeatedly. Let’s see together what we’re able to do about it.
HOW DOES DANDRUFF APPEAR IN DOGS?
You know your dog has dandruff when you notice their skin becoming dry and the first white scales appear on the coat either all over the body or on part of it. Depending on the cause and extent, the appearance of dandruff is sometimes accompanied by itching and irritation on the skin.
WHAT CAUSES DANDRUFF IN DOGS?
Dandruff appears due to disruption of the function of the sebaceous gland and can be due to various reasons.
- Poor Nutrition: Healthy skin and coat require good quality food suitable for the growth stage of our dog, rich in fatty acids and protein. Poor or incomplete nutrition affects the skin and coat health, resulting in dandruff (especially in puppies).
- Atopic/sensitive skin: If your dog has dry or atopic skin, they could develop white spots and scales on the coat and skin.
- Season: Seasonal fall of dead hair so that the dog adapts to the new season or abrupt temperature changes can cause skin disorder and, thus dandruff.
- Stress: The appearance of dandruff is a common symptom of stress in dogs.
- Insufficient or the wrong kind of grooming: Lack of cleanliness and hygiene or the use of inappropriate/unsuitable pet grooming products often cause skin and coat health disorders resulting in our dog developing dandruff.
* Parasites: Parasite infestation should always be treated immediately as it causes various health problems in pets, one of which is the disruption of the skin’s and coat’s health.
* Allergies: Food or seasonal allergies can disrupt the skin’s balance and cause dandruff’s appearance.
* Endocrine / Hormonal disorders / Other diseases: With the necessary check-up and examination by a veterinarian, we must identify if the appearance of dandruff is a symptom that may be due to parasites and skin diseases, allergies or other health problems and follow the appropriate protocol for dealing with the problem.
HOW CAN I TREAT DANDRUFF IN MY DOG?
*If in cooperation with the veterinarian, we exclude the possibility that the appearance of dandruff is due to a skin or other health problem, then the treatment of dandruff in our dog can be done effectively and simply at home with the help of the appropriate grooming and hygiene pet products.
First, it is very important to keep our dog’s skin and coat clean and to have a consistent grooming routine. We also need to brush our dog frequently and remove dead hair.
With the help of Top Dog and the specialized Derma Equilibrium Shampoo, Green Clay Shampoo and Leave-In Mask, you will see the appearance of the skin improve from the very first bath. At the same time, with the systematic use of the products, you will be able to completely get rid of dandruff.
Steps:
Step 1. 1st hand shampooing with the specialized shampoo Derma Equilibrium.
Dilute the shampoo with lukewarm water according to the pet’s weight (find the dilution instructions on the packaging). Shake gently until you have a uniform mixture and apply the diluted mixture to dry (preferably) hair. Massage thoroughly and rinse well.
Step 2. 2nd hand shampoo with the specialised Green Clay Shampoo. Respectively dilute it with lukewarm water depending on the pet’s weight (find the dilution instructions on the packaging), or use it directly as it is (without dilution). Massage thoroughly and rinse until you feel the coat without any shampoo residue. (Don’t worry if you don’t get a lot of foam with the Green Clay shampoo. The green clay it contains works exceptionally, and this particular product does not produce a lot of foam).
Step 3. After rinsing the shampoos, dry the coat using a towel to remove excess moisture. Pump and apply the Leave-In Mask as it is, all over the damp coat, following the hair’s direction and spread it with gentle movements until it is completely absorbed in the application points. Meticulously dry the coat with a hair dryer without rinsing the Leave-In Mask. Do not use a very high temperature or bring the hair dryer too close to the dog’s coat. At the end of the procedure, ensure no moisture is left.
HOW DO TOP DOG’S PRODUCTS WORK AGAINST DANDRUFF?
Derma Equilibrium shampoo treats excessive sebum production and helps restore the balance of the coat. Then, the deep cleansing action of Green Clay shampoo removes dead cells and excess oiliness and helps to better moisturise the skin. Finally, Leave In Mask maintains the balanced hydration throughout the skin and coat, preventing excessive sebum production and the beginning of the vicious circle that causes dandruff.
